AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas women's basketball team fell short of an upset bid of No. 10 Texas-Tyler on Saturday at Concordia Fieldhouse. The Patriots were able to rally in the second half to earn a 72-71 victory.
The Tornados (8-14, 7-11 ASC) pushed out to a 10-point lead in the first half, and the hosts held a 37-33 advantage at halftime.
However, Texas-Tyler (23-1, 18-1 ASC) scored 26 of the first 40 points of the final frame to take a 59-51 lead. Concordia Texas was able to battle back, tying the game at 61-all when
Kia Love buried a short jumper with 4:05 to play.
A 5-1 spurt allowed the Patriots to reclaim a four-point lead in the next minute.
Nadine Fadelle trimmed the lead back to one after knocking down a 3-pointer with 3:06 remaining. The Patriots answered by pushing the advantage back to four with 1:56 left in the contest.
Kayla Strobel then netted a 3-pointer with 48 seconds to go, but Madison Wilson connected on a traditional three-point play to stretch UT-Tyler's lead to 72-68 with 23 seconds left.
Concordia was unable to get close enough to overtake the Patriots, but
Emily Cullers hit a 3-pointer as time expired to pull within one.
The Tornados connected on a program-record 13 3-pointers in the loss. Five CTX players reached double figures, led by
Ashlyn Ward's 16 points. Strobel scored 15, while Cullers added a dozen and Fadelle put in 11. Love tallied 10 and collected a team-high six rebounds.
Jasmin Baskin logged a game-best 27 points, including 18 from beyond the arc, to pace Texas-Tyler.
Following the game, the Tornados honored their three seniors – Fadelle, Love and Ward.
Concordia will hit the road to close out the regular season next weekend. The Tornados will begin their road trip at Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, Feb. 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Abilene.
