BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Concordia University Texas softball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne on Sunday at Lady Jacket Field. The Tornados won the opening game 6-3 and picked up a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.
Concordia Texas (6-11, 6-7 ASC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opener, thanks to a three-run third inning that included a two-RBI single by
Valerie Gonzales. After the Lady Jackets (6-13, 2-11 ASC) posted single tallies in both the third and fourth innings, the Tornados responded with a pair of runs in the fifth. Howard Payne scored once in the seventh, but it was not enough for the hosts.
Sydney Coffey (2-4) earned the win, as the right-hander scattered 10 hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out two.
In the second game, CTX cruised after scoring five runs in the first three frames.
Blayr Huff hit a two-run homer in the second inning that put the Tornados on top 3-0. Three panels later,
Amanda Allard collected a two-run single to give Concordia a 7-0 advantage.
Allard (2-0) also picked the win up in the circle. The right-hander earned the shutout after working around seven hits.
The two teams will close out the set with a single game at 12 p.m. Monday.
