BOX SCORE 2 SAN ANTONIO -- The Concordia Texas softball team split a doubleheader at Trinity Wednesday night, combining for 17 total runs and 26 hits.
Brooke Jones carried the Tornados at the plate, going a combined 5-for-9 and driving in a pair.
GAME ONE - CTX 7, TU 4Concordia (4-7) scored three unearned runs on three Tiger (3-3) errors in the 7-4 win in Wednesday's opener.
Haley Dennett's two-run, two-out double in the top of the third broke a 1-1 stalemate. The Tornados added another pair of runs an inning later on a two-run, two-out single by
Ryan Gibson after Trinity allowed
Angelica Ramirez to reach on an error with two down.
The Tigers got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double off the bat of pinch hitter Sarah Paller to make it 5-3.
Concordia would add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, first on an RBI single from
Olivia Kaase and second on an RBI groundout from
Morgan Loredo.
Trinity managed to score one more in their half of the seventh on an RBI single from Sara McCarty. The Tigers then loaded the bases with two out, but
Shelby Burrus worked out of trouble, striking out the potential game-winning run.
Burrus went the distance for her second victory of the season. She allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out nine.
GAME TWO - TU 11, CTX 10 (8 inn.)Both teams' bats exploded for a combined 21 runs on 25 hits in the nightcap Wednesday, but it was Trinity who would walk off winners.
After the first batter in the bottom of the eighth lined out, the Tigers got a pair of baserunners after the Tornados' sixth error of the contest and a double. The winning run came across on an RBI fielder's choice.
Trinity tied the game in the bottom of the seventh after three Tornado errors, two of which came on the same batter, putting the tying run at third. The tally came in on another miscue.
It was Concordia who would score first, cashing in on a leadoff double by
Brooke Jones in the top of the second. The Tornados added three more in the third thanks to two bases-loaded walks and the first of two Tiger errors.
Trinity answered with six in the bottom of the third.. The home team would draw a pair of bases-loaded walks before Kaci Wellik drove in two on an RBI double. The Tigers added two more runs after a sacrifice fly and a Tornado error.
CTX came right back in the top of the fourth. Dennett opened the frame with a triple and she came around to score on a Trinity error. Jones would then help the Tornados take advantage of the miscue with an RBI knock of her own. Concordia had chances to score more, but two force outs at the plate put an end to the threat.
The Tornados would have a 10-7 lead going to the sixth, but the Tigers cut into it on Paller's two-out, two-run single, setting up the final two frames.
Concordia returns home Friday for a twin bill against Hardin-Simmons as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend. First pitch from Tornado Softball Field is at 4 p.m.
