AUSTIN, Texas -- The Concordia Texas men's tennis squad split its matches Friday at the Austin Tennis Center. The Tornados opened the day with a 5-4 win over the reigning ASC West champion Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru then fell 6-3 to Sul Ross State in the finale.
MATCH ONE - CTX 5, UMHB 4After ending the doubles round in a 2-1 hole, Concordia rallied with four singles wins to take down UMHB Friday afternoon.
Micah Austin and
Victor Escalon put the Tornados on the board with a 8-3 win at the No. 3 doubles. Gabriel Brounda needed a tiebreaker set at the No. 1 singles, edging the Cru's Scott Wildins, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7, as did
Adrian Montes at the No. 4 singles, surpassing Alex Mackeller, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Ioussa Malaki needed a tiebreaker to decide the second set against Julian Dunmore at the No. 3 position, 6-3. 7-6 (6-3).
Jack Proctor also won at the No. 6, 6-2, 6-1.
MATCH TWO - SR 6, CTX 3The Tornados got a win at the No. 1 doubles from the Borunda/Proctor tandem, but the Lobos took home the No. 2 and No. 3 flights to go into the singles round with a 2-1 advantage.
Borunda handled his singles opponent 6-1, 6-1 to stay undefeated on the day. Malaki echoed the feat but needed a super tiebreak to do so, winning 6-2, 5-7, 10-6/
Jack Proctor won his first set at the No. 6 position, but fell in the second and dropped the super tiebreaker, narrowly yielding the point.
