BOX SCORE 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas softball team split Friday's doubleheader at Tornado Softball Field Friday night.
The Tornados (8-25, 5-18 ASC) set a new program standard in game one as the defense turned three double plays, but the Comets (16-17, 12-11) held on for a 3-1 win. CTX then snapped its nine-game skid with a 6-3 triumph in the nightcap.
GAME ONE – UTD 3, CTX 1
Concordia scored the game's first run on an RBI single from
Brooke Jones in the first that scored
Emma Martino, but that was all the Tornados would get as UTD starting pitcher Lauren McLeod allowed just two more hits the rest of the way.
The Comets scored two in the top of the second and added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, but the CTX defense stepped up and forced the visitors to leave 10 on base thanks to three twin-killings.
GAME TWO – CTX 6, UTD 3
Concordia starting pitcher
Sydney Coffey helped herself out with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with two RBI in Friday's nightcap.
The Tornados sent nine to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs. Jones, Coffey and Angelica Ramierez drove in the runs in the frame.
Michelle Livermore's RBI single capped a two-run second for the Comets.
Coffey got the run back on her own with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Ryan Gibson scored on a UTD error in the fifth and doubled in a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
The series finale is tomorrow at noon, with Concordia's senior day festivities starting at about 11:45 a.m.
