Team effort leads Tornados over Mary Hardin-Baylor

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Women's basketball team scored 41 points in the second half on their way to a win over Mary Hardin-Baylor 72-60 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Four Tornados (10-6, 3-4 ASC) scored in double figures led by Emily Cullers' 21 points and had seven rebounds, while Dejean, Ellison and Cato had 18, 10 and 10 respectively. Dejean was everywhere on the court as she also had seven assists and tied her career-high with six rebounds. Defense was the key for CTX in second half as they held the Cru (10-5, 3-3 ASC) to 23.1 percent shooting from the field.
 
In the first quarter, it was Dejean who led the way for the Tornados as she had nine of her 18 points in the quarter. CTX led 15-5 after a 12-3 run, including two three-pointers, with 1:18 left in the quarter. Raven Cato closed out the quarter with her own three and the Tornados led 20-10 after one quarter. CTX maintained their lead through the first half of the second quarter as the led 25-15 with 5:41 left in the quarter. UHMB responded though with a 9-2 to make it a three point game with 3:02 left. The Tornados headed to halftime hanging onto a 31-29 lead.
 
The third quarter was a back-and-forth game as there were eight lead changes and four times the score was tied in the quarter alone. But Cullers would not let CTX down, as they trailed 43-46 with 3:11 left, she went on a personal 9-0 run making three straights shots from beyond the arc. Kaycie Dunkerley's two free-throws gave CTX a 54-48 lead heading into the final quarter. Cullers would add another three in the fourth quarter as the Tornados led 59-51 with 7:17 left. CTX would take their biggest lead of the game with 1:16 as they led 72-58 eventually winning 72-60 to snap their four-game losing streak.
 
The Tornados notched their first win of 2017 and now will head to Alpine, Texas, where they'll face Sul Ross State on Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
