Page, Samuels lead Tornados over Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Concordia men's basketball team, down by 11 points in the second half, came from behind to defeat Howard Payne 91-83 on Saturday afternoon.

Ben Page scored a team-high 19 points for the Tornados, while Joe Neal had a near double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds. CTX made it count at the free-throw line, going 24-29, while they struggled from the field shooting 41.3 percent for the game. The Tornados capitalized on the Yellow Jackets' 24 turnovers as they scored 32 points off the turnovers and had 20 second-chance points.

In the first half, CTX gained an early 9-6 lead after Neal's jumper, but HPU responded with a 14-5 run to retake the lead with 8:49 left. Philip Meikle's three-pointer with 6:38 gave the Tornados a 25-23 lead, as he had 10 points for the game. Tied at 34-34 with less than three minutes remaining, CTX closed out the half on a 14-4 run, capped by a Joshua Samuels three at the buzzer, and headed to the locker up 48-38. Page led the Tornados with 15 points at the half.

The Yellow Jackets opened the half on a 21-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 61-50 with 14:19 remaining in the half. CTX slowly cut into the deficit as a Neal layup plus the free-throw cut the lead to 65-61 with 11:13 left. Samuels scored eight straight points for the Tornados, as he had 17 for the game, and gave them the lead for good at 75-74 with 4:50 left in the game. Ephriam Price, who had 13 points, closed out the game with a dunk and CTX went on to win 91-83 for their second straight win.

The Tornados will return home to Concordia Fieldhouse to face McMurry Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
