AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia women's basketball team outscored McMurry 41-26 in the second half to win their straight game 66-58 on Thursday night.
Jaela Dejean scored a game-high 28 points, including shooting a career-high 17-20 from the free-throw line, while also securing eight rebounds.
Emily Cullers finished with 10 points and tied a career-high with nine rebounds, while
Desiray Davis had a season-high 10 points. The Tornados (12-7, 5-5 ASC) committed 25 turnovers, which the War Hawks (5-13, 1-9 ASC) turned into 18 points, but CTX shot 50 percent from the field in the second half to pull away.
The Tornados opened the first quarter on a 13-2 run, capped by a Cullers jumper with 4:28 remaining. The War Hawks closed within six points, before CTX went on a 10-2 run to close out the quarter and led 23-11 after one, outscoring McMurry 10-4 in the paint. The Tornados struggled offensively throughout the second quarter, shooting 1-15 from the field, and being outscored 21-2 by the War Hawks and headed to the locker room trailing 32-25 at the half. Dejean had eight points to lead CTX.
In the third quarter, the Tornados regained the lead after a 12-1 run and led 37-33 with 5:41 left. CTX would head to the fourth quarter leading McMurry 50-42, as they controlled the paint once again outscoring the War Hawks 12-2 in the quarter. Dejean led the way for the Tornados, as she had 12 points in the third quarter alone. In the fourth quarter, CTX scored 12 of its 16 points from the charity stripe, and clamped down on the defensive end holding McMurry to 16 points on their way to a 66-58 win.
The Tornados have won three of their last four games and have a quick turnaround as they host Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
