Dejean, Tornados overwhelm Hardin-Simmons

AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia women's basketball team led for all but 33 seconds in an 86-70 rout of Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon.

Jaela Dejean led the Tornados (13-7, 6-5 ASC) with a game-high 25 points, as five players scored in double figures. Brenisha Payne was aggressive in the paint throughout the game as she totaled 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Cowgirls (7-11, 3-7 ASC), meanwhile, committed 25 turnovers, which CTX turned into 33 points.

The Tornados were firing on all cylinders in the first quarter as they took their largest lead of the quarter at 26-10 after Mercedes Ellison's free-throw. CTX would lead HSU 28-13 at the end of the first quarter as Dejean scored 10 points in the quarter alone and the Tornados took advantage of the Cowgirls' mistakes scoring 16 points off their turnovers.

In the second quarter, CTX would maintain its double-digit lead as Meghan Musso's jumper made it 40-21 with 4:09 remaining. She had 10 points in the game. Dejean scored six of the team's final eight points of the quarter and the Tornados headed into halftime leading 52-27.

CTX would take their largest lead of the game, 57-29, in the third quarter after Payne's three-pointer, one of the team's nine threes on the day. Kaycie Dunkerley knocked two of her own three-pointers in the quarter, as she had 10 points total in the game, and the Tornados led HSU 71-45 going to the fourth quarter.

CTX would shoot 30.8 percent from the field in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 25-15, but were never in danger of relinquishing the lead as they went on to win 86-70 for their third straight win.

The Tornados will now go on the road to face Mary Hardin-Baylor, who they defeated 72-60 on Jan. 14, on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m.
