Tornados fall short against Mary Hardin-Baylor

BELTON, Texas – The Concordia Women's basketball team was not able to rally in the fourth quarter, suffering a 70-50 setback against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon.
 
Brenisha Payne recorded her first career double-double for the Tornados (13-6, 8-8 ASC) finishing with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Emily Cullers finished with a team-high 15 points, while Jaela Dejean put in 10 points and six assists. The Cru (14-7, 7-5 ASC), meanwhile, outscored CTX 34-12 in the paint and had seven blocks on the defensive end.
 
The Tornados took a 10-8 lead in the first quarter after Payne connected on a three-pointer with 3:05 left. UMHB would close out the quarter on a 7-2 run and led 15-12 after one. CTX would keep the score close, trailing by three points after a Mercedes Ellison jumper with 7:14 remaining in the first half. The Cru responded with an 11-4 run and the Tornados headed to the locker room trailing 31-23. Cullers had seven points including two threes.
 
In the third quarter, CTX trailed 41-31 with four minutes remaining, but rallied with a 10-0 run including three-pointers from Payne and Cullers to tie it all up at 41 all. UMHB knocked down a three before the end of the quarter and led 44-41 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Tornados struggled from the field, connecting only on 2-12 of their shots, while being outscored 26-9 in the quarter. The Tornados committed 15 turnovers in the game and only managed six steals on the defensive end, which was below their season average of 10 per a game.
 
Up next, CTX will face Howard Payne on Thursday night inside Concordia Fieldhouse at 5:30 p.m.
