AUSTIN, Texas –
Raven Cato and
Mercedes Ellison both had double-doubles to propel the Concordia Texas women's basketball team to a 63-48 win over Schreiner in their season opener Wednesday at Concordia Fieldhouse.
The Tornados played stifling defense throughout, holding the Mountaineers to 27.1 percent shooting from the floor to win their home opener for the third straight season.
Ellison, a junior out of Victoria, Texas, led all scorers with 15 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive glass. It was the third double-double of her career.
In the first quarter, CTX used a 7-0 run to pull ahead 14-7 and never looked back. Concordia trailed for just 16 seconds in the entire game.
The Tornados closed the first half on a 16-2 run to go into the break with a 39-18 lead, holding Schreiner to 21.4 percent from the floor and 9.1 percent from beyond the arc in the half.
The Mountaineers did not go away quietly, however, as they outscored CTX 23-7 in the third quarter to make the score 46-41 heading into the fourth.
Ellison took over in the final stanza, picking up eight of her 15 points in the fourth quarter. All eight points were a part of a 15-0 run to put the game away and give the Tornados their first win of the season.
Cato, a sophomore out of Humble, Texas, produced the first double-double of her career with 10 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Kaycie Dunkerley also scored in double digits for CTX, picking up 12 points and going 3-for-7 from 3-point range.
Next up, the Tornados travel to Kerrville, Texas for a rematch with Schreiner Saturday at 4 p.m.
