Tornados come from behind to upset 18th-ranked Guilford College

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind a 43-point second half outburst, the Concordia Texas men's basketball team rallied from a 17-point deficit to upset 18th-ranked Guilford College in the first day of the Daly Seven Tip-Off Classic on Friday.

Trailing 47-30 with 14:45 remaining in the game, to the Quakers, who made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, CTX slowly began to chip away at the deficit.

The Tornados would knock down seven three-pointers in the second half alone, including two of them during their 15-3 run to cut it to 50-45 with 10:15 left in the game.  Joshua Samuels and Philip Meikle each had five points during the run, including a Meikle basket and the foul to cap the run.

CTX also did work on the boards pulling down 13 offensive rebounds, eight of them during the second half, resulting five second chance points and received 28 points from the bench.

Joe Neal knocked down a three-pointer at the 5:10 mark to make it 60-59, giving the Tornados their first lead since they led 9-8 early on.

Guilford would go back on top 65-62, but CTX did not back down as back-to-back layups by Meikle and Ephriam Price III would give the Tornados lead for good with just over three minutes remaining.

The Quakers had one final shot to retake the lead but missed as the buzzer as CTX held on for a 68-67 win. Meikle led all scorers with 16 points, while Price and Samuels each had 14 for the Tornados.

Concordia Texas will return to the court tomorrow for the final day of the Davy Seven Tip-Off Classic, facing Hampden-Sydney at 3 p.m. inside Ragan-Brown Field House. The Tigers dropped to 0-2 on season after losing to Huntingdon College 80-66 in the first game of the tournament.
