GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four different Tornados scored in double figures, but the Concordia Texas men's basketball team dropped an 83-80 decision to Hampden-Sydney College Saturday in the Daly Seven Tip-Off Classic.
Josh Samuels, a senior out of Cypress, Texas, produced 19 points for the Tornados, including going 5-for-11 from downtown, as CTX moved to 1-1 on the young season.
Trailing 30-29 with just under five minutes left in the first half, the Tornados went on a 7-0 run to grab a 36-29 lead. CTX shot 48.8 percent from the floor while holding the Tigers to 35.5 percent in the first half.
The Tornados came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, growing the lead to as many as 12 after Samuels knocked down a three to make it 49-37.
Ben Page, a senior from Cypress, Texas, and
Ephriam Price III both finished the day with 19 points. Page, a senior from Cypress, Texas, had 12 points in the first half alone.
Hampden-Sydney was able to climb back into the game with a 13-1 run and tie the game with 13:07 left to play, but CTX responded with five quick points, three of which came from Samuel's fifth made 3-point basket of the day.
The Tigers took their first lead of the second half at the 9:22 mark when Raheem Anthony made it 58-57. The two teams exchanged buckets back-and-forth for the majority of the half as the Tornados found themselves in their second close game in as many days.
With the game tied 73-73, HSC went on a quick 5-0 run to make the score 78-73 with under a minute to play.
CTX was unable to complete the comeback as the Tiger did a good job of hitting their free throws down the stretch to grab the the win.
The Tornados will make a trip down to Danville, Va. for a matchup with Averett University Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
