AUSTIN, Texas –
Payton Berger had career-highs in both points and rebounds, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team dropped a 55-50 decision to Southwestern Tuesday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.
Berger, a sophomore out of Azle, Texas, led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds in the game as CTX fell to 2-1 on the season.
The Tornados came out of the gates hot as they led 17-5 at the end of the first quarter, holding the Pirates to 20.0 percent from the floor in the quarter.
Southwestern was able to work their way back into the game thanks to a 9-0 run to begin the second quarter. CTX went into halftime with a 21-18 lead in the game.
The game went back and forth for the majority of the third quarter as the Pirates took their first lead with 1:49 left in the quarter and never trailed again.
With the score 39-38 with 6:31 left in the fourth, Southwestern went on an 8-1 run to create separation and were able to keep the Tornados at arms length for the rest of the game and grab the win.
CTX played well defensively, holding SU to 30.0 percent from the floor. The Tornados were unable to crash the boards, however, as they were outrebounded 52-35 in the game.
The Pirates were able to do a lot of damage from the free throw line as they scored 23 of their 55 points from the charity stripe. Comparatively, CTX went just 4-for-10 from the line.
Jaela Dejean was the only other Tornado in double figures with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds.
CTX will look for revenge in a rematch with Southwestern on Saturday in Georgetown, Texas, beginning at 4 p.m.
