GEORGETOWN, Texas – After falling 55-50 to Southwestern on Tuesday, the Concordia Texas women's basketball team avenged their only loss of the season with a 69-64 overtime win over the Pirates Saturday at the Robertson Center.
The Tornados trailed 59-57 with 0:09 left on the clock in regulation when
Jaela Dejean rose up and hit a jumper to tie the game at 59 and send it into overtime. CTX then outscored Southwestern 10-2 in the last 3:18 of overtime to move to 3-1 on the season.
Mercedes Ellison led the way for the Tornados, producing 15 points and eight rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals. Ellison, a junior from Victoria, Texas, has now led CTX in scoring in two of the first four games of the year.
The Pirates came out of the gates hot, going on an 11-2 run in the first quarter to take an 18-8 lead. The Tornados were able to claw their way back into it and cut the lead to 22-19 to end the quarter.
The two teams traded punches throughout the second quarter as CTX trailed 35-34 going into the break thanks in large part to a 6-0 produced single-handedly by
Alyssa Marquez.
It was the Tornados who came out of the locker room hot in the second half as they began the third quarter on a 9-2 run to grab their first lead of the game.
The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle, as neither team scored for almost four full minutes of game time. Ellison broke the streak by knocking down a layup with 0:30 left to tie the game.
CTX played stellar defense late, holding Southwestern without a made field goal for the final 5:32 of regulation. The Tornados were also able to take advantage of turnovers, holding a distinct 24-6 advantage in points off turnovers in the game.
Alexis Torres and
Alyssa Marquez both also scored in double figures, putting up 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Southwestern Classic concludes tomorrow with CTX taking on Texas Lutheran at 2 p.m. in Georgetown, Texas.
