Strong defensive effort leads Tornados past TLU

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Behind a stingy defensive effort, the Concordia Texas women's basketball team won for the second straight day in a row with a 47-39 victory over Texas Lutheran to close out the Southwestern Classic on Sunday.

Knotted up at 37-all after three quarters, the Tornados locked down the Bulldogs in the final period as they held them to only two points. Overall, CTX held TLU to 23 percent from the field.

Jaela Dejean did all her work in the first half, scoring six points in each quarter, including a pair of three-pointers to lead the team to a 28-21 halftime edge.

Payton Berger nearly had a double-double, reaching double figures with 10 points, seven of them in the second half, while pulling down nine rebounds. Mercedes Ellison also had nine boards for the game along with her six points.

After a Bulldogs bucket to begin the fourth quarter, the Tornados would score the final 10 points of the game, with the last five coming at the free-throw line to wrap up the 47-39 win.

Next up, CTX heads out to Marshall, Texas to begin conference play as they face East Texas Baptist on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
