RICHARDSON, Texas –
Payton Berger had a double-double and
Jaela Dejean put up 21 points, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team dropped an 84-78 decision to Trinity University Saturday at UTD Activity Center.
Berger, a sophomore out of Azle, Texas, produced 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the loss as CTX dropped to 6-6 on the season. The Tornados' non-conference season comes to a close with a 4-4 overall record.
Trinity jumped ahead early thanks to an 8-0 run near the end of the first quarter and went into the second with a 19-11 lead. The Tigers continued the theme of closing a quarter strong by using another 8-0 run to head into halftime with a 43-32 lead.
CTX mounted a comeback to begin the second half as they used a 12-3 run to cut the lead to two with 5:55 left in the third. Trinity put a stop to the comeback, however, as they closed strong once again and held a 64-51 lead going into the final stanza.
The Tornados did not go down without a fight even after trailing by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter.
Kaycie Dunkerley nailed a 3-pointer to make the game 79-74 with 1:31 left to play.
The game would not get any closer though as Trinity went 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to pull off the six point victory.
Dejean, a senior out of Houston, scored at least 20 points for the second time this season while also adding six assists and a career-high three blocked shots.
Mercedes Ellison and Dunkerley also scored in double figures for CTX, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Tornados will now turn their attention to the American Southwest Conference as they take on Belhaven Thursday at Concordia Fieldhouse at 5:30 p.m.
