PINEVILLE, LA – The Concordia Softball team opened their 2017 season on the road, splitting the doubleheader against Louisiana College on Friday afternoon.
In game one, the Tornados fell behind 4-0 after back to back two-run innings by the Wildcats. CTX would threaten with a hit in each inning, but was unable to get a run across till the fifth-inning.
After giving up four runs in the first two innings,
Kati Turner did not allow another hit for the rest of the game, pitching six innings allowing only four hits and striking out one.
In the top of the sixth, the Tornados threatened with runners on second and third, but a groundout ended the inning. A two-out single in the seventh was not enough as CTX's rally fell short and dropped the first game 4-1.
In game two of the day, the Tornados turned to
Shelby Burrus on the mound.
LC would strike first, scoring three runs in the second inning. But in the fourth, CTX would get a run back after
Brittani Whitten's two-out single brought home
Kayla Patton. Patton would end up 2-3 at the plate and scored twice.
Haley Dennett would lead off the sixth inning with a single, after a sac bunt, Patton got on with a single of her own to put two runners on with Whitten coming to the plate. Whitten would follow up with a three-run home run to left field to give her four RBIs on the day and the Tornados their first lead of the day.
After giving up three runs in the second inning, Burrus responded by shutting down the Wildcats for the rest of the game and took the win as CTX defeated LC 4-3.
Up next, the Tornados will play the rubber game of the series Saturday at noon.
