AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Women's basketball team dealt with foul trouble throughout the game and were unable to rally against Howard Payne, losing 82-65 on Thursday night.
Jaela Dejean finished with her first career double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds, while
Brenisha Payne scored a game-high 17 points for Tornados, who lost their first home game of the season. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, dominated the boards and had 21 second-chance points in the game.
In the first quarter, CTX played stout defense, holding HPU to seven points in the quarter and shooting only 2-12 from the field. The Tornados leaned on
Desiray Davis and Dejean as both had six points in the quarter and led 12-7 after one. The Yellow Jackets would respond in the second quarter, opening with a 14-2 run to take a 21-14 lead with 4:25 remaining. Turnovers were the difference in the quarter as HPU gained an 8-0 margin in points off turnovers and led 33-24 at the half. Dejean had eight points at the half, but was dealing with three fouls.
In the third quarter, CTX was unable to cut into the deficit as the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 57-43.
Kaycie Dunkerley was the bright spot for the Tornados, as she scored seven of her nine points in the quarter. In the final quarter, CTX continued to battle, cutting HPU's lead to 64-55 with 6:34 left. Payne, scored 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter, including seven straight points, but Yellow Jackets maintained their lead throughout the quarter as they went on to win 82-65.
