BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Women's basketball team closed out their home season with a 72-62 win over Sul Ross State in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Jaele Dejean finished with 27 points to lead the Tornados, including eight in the overtime period.
Mercedes Ellison ended the game with her first double-double of her career scoring 13 points, and grabbing 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. CTX finished 17 offensive rebounds as a team, as they outscored the Lobos in second-chance points 16-2.
The Tornados went back and forth with SRSU as the first quarter had four lead changes alone. Dejean's jumper in the final minute cut the deficit to 16-15 at the end of the first. CTX would outscore the Lobos 18-12 in the second quarter, despite shooting 5-14 from the field. The Tornados took advantage of SRSU's turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off their turnovers and took a 33-28 lead into the half, led by Dejean's nine points.
Kaycie Dunkerley had eight points in the first half.
CTX would open the third quarter on a 6-0 run capped by an Ellison jumper to take their largest lead of the game at 39-28 with 6:35 left. The Lobos would counter with their own 13-4 run to make it 43-41 heading to the fourth quarter. In the fourth, tied at 45-45, the Tornados would go on a quick 6-0 run capped by a pair of free-throws by Dejean and led with 4:10 left in the quarter. SRSU would tie the game for the third time in the quarter on a three-pointer to make it 56 all. With one second left,
Emily Cullers' heave at the buzzer was no good and the game headed towards overtime.
CTX would outscore the Lobos 16-6 in the overtime period to win 72-62 and finish the season 10-1 at home. It was senior day for the Tornados and Cullers and
Alexis Copeland were honored after the game for their respective careers at Concordia.
CTX closes out the season on the road, traveling to Abilene, Texas to face Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and then will face McMurry on Feb. 18.
