Tornados sweep Schreiner in home opener

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Softball team swept Schreiner in their home-opening doubleheader on Wednesday night.

In game one, the Tornados (3-2) scored in the last three innings, including a four-run fifth inning, and won 10-2 in six innings due to the run rule.

Shelby Burrus got the start on the mound pitching a complete game, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four for her second win on the season. The Mountaineers (4-4) struck first with two runs in the third inning after a two-run double with the bases loaded. Burrus escaped further damage getting the groundout with runners in scoring position.

In the bottom half of the inning, CTX would respond with three runs as Emma Martino led off reaching on an error followed by a Hayley Dennett single. After a sac bunt moved the runners, Shelby Harper hit a two-run double to tie the game up at 2-2. Brittani Whitten would bring in with an RBI single to make it 3-2.

After adding two more runs in the fourth, the Tornados would open it in the fifth, scoring four runs to make it 9-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Harper would end the game hitting a shot to center for the first home run ever at Tornado Softball Field and the run rule going into effect as CTX won 10-2.

In game 2, the Tornadoes turned to Katie Turner on the mound, pitching a complete game, giving up only one run on four hits while striking out four for her first win of the season.

CTX started the scoring in the first inning as Dennett and Alexia Rowe reached on errors. Whitten would bring home Dennett on the sac fly and led 1-0 after one. Payton Walker led off the second with a home run off the scoreboard in left for her first homer of the season and gave the Tornados a 2-0 lead.

Turner took it from there, as she gave up only one hit through the first three frames. Schreiner threated with runners in scoring position with one out in the fourth, but Turner was able to get out of the jam retiring the next two batters.

CTX would add two more runs in the fourth on a Whitten single and extended their lead to 4-0. The Mountaineers would push a run in the seventh, but Turner ended the game on a groundout, her eighth of the game, to sweep the series.

Next up, the Tornados will host conference foe Sul Ross State beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 17, that will start at 5 p.m. followed by the second game.
