AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Women's basketball team won its second game in a row, defeating Hardin-Simmons 69-61 on Thursday night.
Four Tornados (15-9, 8-7 ASC) scored in double figures, led by
Jaela Dejean's game-high 21 points and five rebounds.
Brenisha Payne scored 17, including 11 coming from the free-throw line, while
Emily Cullers had a near double-double scoring nine points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds. CTX took advantage of the Cowgirls (8-15, 4-11 ASC) turnovers, scoring 16 points off turnovers in the game.
The Tornados outscored HSU 14-11 in the first quarter, with 12 of them coming in the paint. Dejean scored eight points in the quarter. In the second quarter, CTX opened on a 10-4 run capped by a three-pointer by Cullers. The Cowgirls would respond with a 10-2 run, cutting the lead to 26-25 with 1:11 left in the quarter. The Tornados headed to the locker room with a slim 28-26 lead. CTX outscored HSU 14-2 in bench points.
The lead would change three times in the third quarter as HSU took a 38-36 with 5:12 left. The Tornados would cut it to 48-46 at the end of the quarter after a Cullers three-pointer. CTX would be outscored in the paint 14-2, but scored 18 points off the bench in the quarter. The Tornados would score 23 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cowgirls 23-13. Payne and Dejean would score 18 of the team's 23 points in the quarter. Tied at 53-53, CTX would go on a 13-3 run to take the lead for good and went on to win 69-61.
The Tornados will next face McMurry on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in their final game of the regular season before the ASC tournament, which begins next week.
