GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Concordia Softball team took the short trip to Southwestern, splitting a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
In game one, the Tornados (7-3) scored more runs, 13, than hits, 12, scoring all the runs before the fourth inning.
Angelica Arroyo had a career-high five hits as she scored twice and had two RBIs.
Summer Harper had a two-run single and walked three times. The Pirates (3-7) would give up five walks and committed three errors in the game.
Shelby Burrus got the start on the mound and was greeted with a three-run triple in the first inning by Kaitlynn Copher and SU took an early 3-0 lead after one. CTX would not be down for long though as they batted around and put up eight runs in the second. Arroyo, Harper, and
Morgan Loredo all had two RBIs in the inning as the Tornados took an 8-3.
CTX was not done, following up with five more runs in the third inning.
Emma Martino and
Haley Dennett were hit by pitches in the inning and three wild pitches were thrown. Harper worked an RBI walk to bring home the fifth run of the inning and the Tornados led 13-3.
Lauren Camacho came in the third for Burrus, who notched her fourth win of the year, and pitched the final four innings giving up four runs, but CTX held on, winning 13-7.
In game two, the offense for the Tornados sputtered as they were unable to push across a run.
SU, meanwhile, would score in every inning except the fourth, as they won 8-0 in five innings.
Kati Turner went three innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits. Burrus came in to finish the game as the Pirates scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to implement the run rule and end the game.
CTX had four hits in the game, including a
Brittani Whitten double, but were unable to bring her home. The loss ended the Tornados' six-game winning streak.
Off the field, Dennett was honored as ASC West Division player of the week after going 8-19 at the plate last week as the Tornados went 5-0 at home.
Next up, CTX will travel to Abilene, Texas for a three-game series with Hardin-Simmons beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday.
