The Concordia Softball Team, behind
Shelby Burrus' complete game, defeated Hardin-Simmons 2-1 in game one of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.
Burrus spread five hits over seven innings as the Tornados (8-3, 5-2 ASC) have now won seven of their last eight games. Burrus is now 5-0 on the season, her best start to a season in her career. CTX only mustered four hits on the day, but it provided enough run support.
Summer Harper put the Tornados on the board in the second inning with a solo home run to left-center, her second on the season, and led 1-0. The Cowgirls (1-8, 0-7 ASC) tied it at 1-1 in the third on an Alexis Vines single.
In the fourth,
Brittani Whitten worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by
Ryan Gibson and reached third after a single by
Olivia Kaase. With
Morgan Loredo at the plate, HSU pitcher Genia Jones threw a wild pitch, and Whitten was able to come home and make it 2-1.
In the seventh, the Cowgirls had the tying run at second with one out, but Burrus would strike out the next two batters to end the game.
Up next, CTX will play HSU in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
