Tornados win road series against Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas – The Concordia Softball team played a doubleheader to conclude its road series against Hardin-Simmons, splitting the pair of games on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, the Tornados were only able to score three runs in comparison to the Cowgirls' nine runs, as they lost 9-3. Kati Turner got the start for CTX, but was only to go three plus innings, as she was tagged with three runs on seven hits. Payton Walker had two of the Tornados' five hits on the day, scoring twice, while Haley Dennett had a hit and two RBIs.

HSU struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the third inning on two hits. CTX would tie in up in the fourth, after Walker and Kaase reached base, Dennett would bring them home on a double to left and made it 2-2.

The Cowgirls would take back the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a run. Lauren Camacho relieved Turner in the fourth, as she got the final two outs to end the inning. HSU blew the game open in the fifth, with a six-run inning, as they batted around and led 9-2.

Shelby Burrus pitched the final 1.1 innings of the game, while the Tornados added a run in the seventh to make it 9-3, but a groundout ended the game.

In game two, Burrus would get the ball to start the game. She would go the distance, and notched her sixth win on the season, as CTX won 5-3.

Emma Martino in the leadoff spot went 3-4 with a run scored, while Summer Harper hit her third home run of the year for two RBIs on the day.

The Cowgirls once again, scored first with a run in the second inning on an RBI double by Katelyn Joyner. In the next half inning, the Tornados would send seven runners to the plate and push across four runs to take the lead 4-1.

With one out, CTX had back-to-back singles by Angelica Arroyo and Martino. Arroyo would come home on an RBI double by Dennett. After a Walker sac fly, Harper would send a shot over the left field for the final two runs of the inning.

The Tornados would add a run in the sixth; followed by two runs in the bottom half of the inning by HSU making it 5-3.

Burrus would issue a two-out walk in the seventh, but that is all she allowed for the Cowgirls as she forced a groundout to end the game and secure the win.

Next up, CTX will return home for a five-game homestand beginning with a doubleheader against Trinity on Wednesday, March 1, at 5 p.m.
