AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team used an eight-run third inning to propel past Southwestern for their fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon.
The Tornados batted around in third inning scoring eight runs on eight hits, including two hits by both
Bret Leiferman and
Luke Kress. Leiferman would finish the day scoring twice and had two RBIs, while Kress had three hits driving in three runs and scoring once.
Matthew Williams got the start for CTX as he went five plus innings giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out three for his first win on the year.
The Pirates struck first in the second inning scoring fours, three of them unearned, after a dropped ball in right allowed the inning to continue.
The Tornados would respond in the bottom half of the third as the first four batters would reach base. Kress' two-run single to left center brought home
Colton Poindexter and Leiferman to make it 4-2.
Jake Valadez would make it 4-3 on a fielder choice.
Two more runs would come home on an error. Poindexter, in his second at bat of the inning, would drive in a run to make it 6-4. Leiferman would hit his second double of the inning to make it 7-4, followed by Kress' RBI single during which Leiferman was thrown out at the plate.
CTX would add a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 10-4. .
Justin Traxler,
Kylen Harrell and
Ryan Capel would close out the game combining to pitch 3.2 innings, giving up no hits and striking out two for the Sunday win.
On Friday, the Tornados defeated Concordia Chicago 8-2. The win marked Head Coach
Tommy Boggs' 200th career win. Boggs is in his eight season at Concordia and has led CTX to multiple NCAA regional appearances, two ASC Tournament championships, and two ASC regular season titles. During his tenure, multiple Tornados have been selected in the MLB draft and have received multiple conference accolades.
Up next, CTX will begin conference play in a weekend series against Sul Ross State that will begin on Friday at 7 p.m.
