Tornados come up short against UMHB

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Softball team faced Mary Hardin-Baylor in a doubleheader on Friday night, dropping both games in the final inning.

In game one, The Tornados struck first in the first inning after Emma Martino led off with a single and came home on an RBI ground out by Katie Daniel.

The Cru tied it up at 1-1 in the fourth inning, but CTX responded in the bottom half of the inning after a walk and hit by pitch led off the inning. A fielder choice by Olivia Kaase scored Kayla Patton to make it 2-1.

UMHB pushed across a run in the sixth inning on an RBI double to tie it up 2-2. The game remained tied after seven innings and the teams headed to extra innings.

Neither team gained an edge till the ninth, when the Cru took a 6-2 lead on four hits in the inning. In the bottom half of the ninth, the Tornados were retired in order to end the game. Shelby Burrus received the loss despite pitching all nine innings and giving up on nine hits.

In game two, CTX and UMHB went back and forth scoring a total of 17 runs.

The Cru grabbed the first lead of the game in the fifth on a three-run home run by Leah Brown to lead 3-0.

The Tornados responded in the bottom of the sixth, where they would score five runs to take the lead. The first three batters reached on singles to load the bases for Kaase.

She cleared the bases on a double to tie it up at 3-3. One out late, Brittani Whitten tripled to give CTX the lead and came home later in the inning on a passed ball.

In the top of the seventh UMHB scored nine runs as they batted around and had seven hits in the inning. Lauren Camacho came on the inning for Kati Turner, who started the game for CTX. Camacho finally ended the inning of a ground out to second, but the Tornados trailed 12-5.

In their last at-bat, CTX would move runners to first and second, but were unable to bring them home as the Cru retired the side to end the game.

The Tornados return to the field on Saturday for the series finale against UMHB at noon.
