Tornados use late-inning heroics to defeat Belhaven

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Softball used late inning rallies to defeat Belhaven in both games of a doubleheader on Friday night.

In game one, the Tornados went into their final at-bat down 1-0 and with only two hits on the night. Angelica Arroyo reached base on a one-out walk. One out later, Kayla Patton sent a single to right to put two runners on with two outs.

Haley Dennett tied it up at 1-1 after an RBI single to left-center. Summer Harper would win the game for CTX after a walk-off single brought home Patton and took the game 2-1.

Shelby Burrus remained perfect on the season as she won her eighth game on the year. Burrus pitched a complete game three-hitter, giving up an unearned run in the second inning after an Arroyo error. But retired 10 straight batters at one point and had a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to keep the deficit a 1-0.

In game two, the teams would combine for 15 runs on 21 hits in a slugfest.

The Tornados would take an early 3-0 in the first after a one-out walk to Patton followed by three straight hits, including a two-run double by Brittani Whitten.

The Blazers would take back the lead in the next half inning in a four-run second. A CTX error led to three of the four runs being unearned as Burrus started the second game for the Tornados.

CTX would add a run in the bottom half of the inning, before BU would retake the lead in the third and ended Burrus' night as Lauren Camacho came in for relief and was able to end the inning as the Blazers led 5-4.

In the sixth, trailing 6-4, the Tornados would bat around scoring five runs in the inning. CTX totaled six hits in the inning, including RBI singles by Patton and Dennett and headed into the seventh with Dennett on the mound to close the game out.

Dennet, who came in relief of Camacho in the fifth, pitched the final three innings giving up only one hit and had a perfect seventh inning to earn her first on the season as the Tornados won 9-6.

Up next, CTX will go for the sweep against BU with the series final on Saturday at 11 a.m.
