TYLER, Texas –
Matthew Brown allowed only three hits over seven plus innings as the Concordia Baseball team defeated third-ranked UT Tyler 5-2 in the elimination game of the NCAA West Regional on Friday.
Brown allowed only two runs on the three hits while striking out a pair. The Tornados used stellar defense too, turning two double plays and a diving catch by
Race Mellman in center field, he would finish the game with two hits, a run scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases.
CTX would take the lead in the second as they scored four runs in the inning, all with two outs.
Caleb Maddox would lead off the inning with a single. Two outs later,
Wilkes Swaim would bring home the first run of the game on an infield single. Three straight Tornados' hits would follow, including an RBI triple by
Casen Novak, to make it 4-0 after two innings of play.
Brown, meanwhile, would not allow a Patriot runner till the fourth. After a leadoff walk in the fifth, CTX would get out of the inning on a foul out and turned a 4-6-3 double play.
Matthew Williams would come in relief in the eighth with a runner on first and one out, but would escape with another Tornados' double play. Williams retired UTT in order in the ninth to clinch the win and keep CTX's season alive.
Next up, the Tornados will face the loser between Centenary and Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 3 p.m. in another elimination game.
