TYLER, Texas – The Concordia Baseball team went deep twice, while
Justin Traxler allowed only two runs, defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor 7-2 in game one of the first round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament.
Caleb Rodriguez and
Michael Evan both went deep with two-run home runs as the Tornados scored seven runs on nine hits.
Traxler started the game for CTX, pitching into the eighth, allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
The Tornados led 3-0 after the first three frames with Rodriguez going deep in the second and a
Jake Valadez sac fly in the third. The Cru would get a run back in the fourth before Evan stroked a homer over the left field wall in the sixth to push the lead to 5-1.
Race Mellman and
Bret Leiferman each had RBI singles in the seventh for insurance runs as CTX led 7-2 after seven innings.
Matthew Williams came on in relief in the eighth, striking out a pair, in two innings of work to close out the game for the Tornados.
CTX now moves to the winner's side of the blue bracket and will face the winner of Louisiana College and UT Tyler on Saturday at 3 p.m.
