AUSTIN, Texas – Fresh off a game where she became the ninth player in CTX history to score 1,000 points,
Jaela Dejean had another big game to help the Concordia Texas women's basketball team upset UT Dallas 67-55 at Concordia Fieldhouse Monday night.
Dejean, a senior from Houston, produced 20 points, seven steals and six rebounds as the Tornados moved to 8-10, 4-6 ASC and handed the Comets just their just their second loss in American Southwest Conference play.
CTX started the game hot, going up 11-3 with 5:19 left in the quarter thanks to a 3-pointer from
Kaycie Dunkerley.
UT Dallas made a run of their own to take a one point lead, but it was the only lead they would have in the game as
Sara Perez hit a layup that would put Concordia up for the remainder of the game.
The second quarter started similarly to the first, with the Tornados going on an 8-0 run to go up by 11. From there, CTX was able to keep the Comets at arms-length as they went into the break with a 31-21 lead.
The Comets attempted to make a run in the fourth when they cut the lead to 54-46 with 3:18 left, but were unable to get any closer as the Tornados were phenomenal from the free-throw line down the stretch, going 19-for-21 in the game. Dejean was a big part of the success, hitting 12 of her 13 shots from the charity stripe.
Mercedes Ellison and
Payton Berger produced 14 and 13 points, respectively in the game while adding six boards and three steals apiece.
CTX played fantastic defense throughout, holding UTD to just 28.1 percent from the floor and 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. They also forced 14 turnovers, which led to 28 points off turnovers in the game.
The Tornados continue their six-game home stand with a matchup against Sul Ross State on Thursday night beginning at 5:30 at Concordia Fieldhouse.
