TYLER, Texas – The Concordia Texas volleyball team, playing in the second American Southwest Conference crossover of the season, would pick up straight-set wins over LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist on Friday.
With the two wins, it gives the Tornados 12 sweeps for the season, which is their most since last year when they also had 12 straight-set wins.
In the first match of the day, against the Yellow Jackets, CTX would dominate, winning 25-10, 25-19, 25-16.
The Tornados would trail early 5-6 before going on a 10-1 run to take control of the first set and never looked back thanks to
Alexis Bustos' four kills.
In set two, LETU would lead 15-13 before another CTX run, closing the set out on a 12-4 run capped off by
Haley Mandeville's service ace, she finished the match with five.
The Tornados wrapped up the third set 25-16 to complete the sweep, led by
Tristyn Massey and
Marissa Stinson, who each had 13 kills apiece to lead the team.
In the second match of the day, CTX continued their winning ways, taking down the Tigers 25-23, 25-19, 25-16.
In a nail-biting first set, The Tornados would hold off a late ETBU run to win it 25-23 thanks in part to Massey's four kills in the set, while
Marjani Myles and
Rylee Davis would give CTX the final two points to win the set.
In the second set, the Tornados and Tigers would go back and forth and be deadlocked at 18-all. Massey would catch fire for CTX with three straight kills as a part of a 7-1 run to win the set 25-19.
In the final set, the Tornados jumped out to a 9-4 lead and would not look back, rolling to a 25-16 set win to finish off the second sweep of the day.
Massey and Stinson each reached double figures in kills once again with 10 and 12, respectively. Four players would each have at least 10 digs, led by
Rylee Davis and
Georgia Quiroz, who both had 17 for the match.
Up next, CTX will face 17th-ranked UT Tyler to close out the ASC Crossover on Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Patriot Center in Tyler, Texas. The match will not count to the Tornados' conference record as the Patriots are in the process of reclassification to Division II.
