Tornados drop five set heartbreaker to McMurry

AUSTIN, Texas – After dropping the first two sets of the match, the Concordia Texas volleyball team battled back to win sets three and four before eventually falling 3-2 Saturday at Concordia Fieldhouse.

Tristyn Massey and Marissa Stinson both set career highs in kills as the Tornados dropped to 17-10, 11-4 in American Southwest Conference play.

Massey, a junior out of Amarillo, Texas, and Stinson, a junior from Pearland, Texas, produced a whopping 23 kills over five sets.

Despite the loss, CTX still clinched the No. 2 seed for the West Division in the ASC Tournament by virtue of winning more total sets head-to-head against McMurry.

The War Hawks came out hot early, winning the close first set 25-23 and grabbing set two 25-15.

The third set was a back-and-forth marathon. With McMurry leading 24-23, the Tornados fought off the first of a six total match points to eventually grab a thrilling 34-32 victory in the set.

In set number four, the two teams traded leads multiple times once again. CTX pulled away late, however, winning five of the final six points in the set to win 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.

The Tornados jumped ahead early in the fifth, holding a 7-4 lead before a War Hawk timeout. Coming out of the time, McMurry won three straight points to tie the set at seven.

After fending off another match point at 14-13, the War Hawks eventually took home the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.

Setter Georgia Quiroz and libero Rylee Davis also set a career-high in the match. Quiroz, a sophomore from Georgetown, Texas, picked up 57 total assists while Davis, a sophomore out of Austin, Texas, led all players in the match with 34 digs.

The Tornados will now turn their attention to the ASC Tournament as they take on the No. 3 seed in the East LeTourneau on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
