BROWNWOOD, Texas – Behind an offensive outburst, the Concordia Texas men's soccer team continued to remain unbeaten in conference play, cruising past Howard Payne 4-0 on Thursday.
The Tornados would fire off 16 shots in the game, seven of them being on frame, while limiting the Yellow Jackets to only seven shots and recording their fourth shutout in their last six games.
Concordia Texas would start fast thanks to
Zack Kusak's first career goal, coming in the ninth minute on an assist from
Joel Abrego. Kusak would shoot it from deep, sailing over the keeper's head and into the net.
Alex Hayek, with an assist from Kusak, would double the Tornados' lead in the 36th minute with his first career goal off a deflection, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Concordia Texas would not slow down in the second half as
Victor Gomez joined the scoring festivities with his first career goal in the 51st minute with an assist from
Daniel Valadez.
Omar Aguirre, who entered the game second in the conference in goals scored, put the game away for good with his 10th goal of the season coming in the 66th minute on an assist from
Jason Saco-Vertiz.
With the goal, Aguirre is in sole possession of the second-most goals in a single-season in program history, behind only Mohamed Diallo's 11-goal season in 2011. He is now at 18 goals in his career, only one goal behind the program record for goals in a career, set by former teammate
Alejandro Labastida in 2017.
With the win, the Tornados move to 6-0 in American Southwest Conference play and will next face UT Dallas on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Richardson, Texas
