AUSTIN, Texas –
Payton Berger posted her first double-double of the season and the Concordia Texas women's basketball team controlled most of the game as they defeated Schreiner 66-56 on Tuesday.
Berger led the way for the Tornados, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 boards for a double-double, while teammate and Azle, Texas native,
Kaycie Dunkerley had 12 points to go along with her nine rebounds.
Dunkerley's first of three three-pointers on the night gave CTX an early 9-4 lead, from there they would never look back, outscoring the Mountaineers 18-14 in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Tornados would hold SU to seven points, and closed out the first half on a 10-3 run, capped off by a Berger layup, heading to the locker room up 33-22.
In the second half, CTX would continue their stout defense of the Mountaineers, holding them to 18 percent shooting from the field and took their largest lead at 43-28 after a Berger three-pointer early in the third quarter.
Schreiner would put together a late rally in the fourth, cutting it to seven with under two minutes to play, but
Alyssa Marquez would knock down four free throws in the closing moments as the Tornados held on.
Marquez would finish the game with a game-high 13 points, including knocking down three jumpers from behind the arc.
Up next, Concordia Texas will head to Seguin, Texas for the TLU Classic, where they will face Southwestern on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a matchup with Texas Lutheran on Sunday at 3 p.m.
