AUSTIN, Texas – In a back-and-forth game that saw eight ties and 10 lead changes, the Concordia Texas women's basketball team came up just short in overtime at Concordia Fieldhouse against Ozarks Monday afternoon 76-67.
Kaycie Dunkerley,
Payton Berger and
Allie Garza all scored in double figures, but it was not enough as CTX was outscored 13-4 in the overtime period and dropped to 3-8, 1-3 ASC on the year.
Ozarks started off the game with a flurry, using an early 8-0 run to build a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles shot 63.6 percent from the floor and led 21-15 at the end of the opening period.
The two teams traded baskets for the rest of the first half and UO took a 33-27 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The Tornados made a run of their own to being the second half, taking a 34-33 advantage thanks to a 7-0 run capped off by a four-point play from Dunkerley to start the third quarter.
In the fourth, the back-and-forth affair continued with neither team leading by more in than six points in the quarter.
Trailing by two with just 10 seconds left on the clock, Garza drove into the lane and was able to draw contact to head to the free throw line. The freshman from Houston calmly drilled both free throws and sent the game into OT.
The Eagles owned the overtime period, however, scoring the first 12 points of extra time to take home the nine-point victory.
Dunkerley, a junior from Azle, Texas, finished with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds while Berger, also a junior out of Azle, Texas, added 17 points and five boards.
Next up, CTX will travel to Richardson, Texas, for the UT Dallas Classic after the Christmas holiday. The Tornados will open the tournament with a matchup against Berry College on Friday, Dec. 28 at 3:00 p.m.
