RICHARDSON, Texas –
Kaycie Dunkerley scored 19 points and
Payton Berger added 17 to help the Concordia Texas women's basketball team pick up a 60-51 victory over Berry College Friday in the first game of the UT Dallas Classic at UTD Activity Center.
The Tornados played stellar defensively, holding the Vikings to 32.7 percent shooting from the floor while forcing 19 turnovers to move to 4-8 on the season.
Trailing 6-0 early in the contest, CTX went on a 15-3 run fueled by 11 combined points from Dunkerley and Berger to take a lead at the end of the first quarter.
The two teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter, with neither team leading by more than five points as the Tornados went into the locker room holding a 26-25 lead.
Dunkerley and Berger came out firing in the second half, scoring nine of the first 12 total points of the quarter to give CTX a seven-point lead.
Berry College made a run of their own, however, to close the third quarter and begin the fourth. The Vikings outscored the Tornados 8-2 over four minutes of game action to tie the game at 43 with 8:00 left to play.
Leading 46-45 in the fourth, CTX began to pull away thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Dunkerley and
Lindsay Carter. The Tornados outscored Berry 14-6 down the stretch to take home the victory.
Berger, a junior from Azle, Texas, added eight rebounds to her stat line while going 7-for-11 from the floor.
The Tornados will return to action Saturday in the final day of the UT Dallas Classic with a matchup against Manchester Univ. at 1:00 p.m. inside UTD Activity Center
