SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Concordia Texas softball team opened their 2018 season with a doubleheader against Trinity, losing both games by a combined three runs on Saturday.
In the first game, the Tornados would take an early 2-0 lead in the third inning after
Brittani Whitten's RBI double drove in
Emma Martino followed by a
Haley Dennett RBI single.
Jorden Russell, pitching in her first game as a Tornado allowed only six hits over seven innings, while striking out two Tigers.
Trinity would strike back in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs and take a 3-2 lead with another run in the forth.
Trailing 6-2 in their final at bat, Whitten would double down the left field line and CTX cut the deficit to two, but the next two CTX batters were retired in order and the Tornados lost 6-4.
In the second game of the day, it was a back-and-forth battle as CTX scratched across a run in the first and third innings and led 2-1 after three.
The Tornados would tack on two more runs in the sixth on an
Olivia Kaase RBI triple and a Dennett RBI single. Dennett finished the day 5-9 from the plate over the two games.
The Tigers would score three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-all.
In extra innings,
Mycahla Howard's RBI groundout would give CTX back the lead at 6-5. But Trinity responded with two runs in bottom half of the inning to take the second game 6-5.
Whitten finished with four hits on the day, three of them being doubles, scoring once and driving in three.
Up next, the Tornados will travel to Kerrville, Texas for a doubleheader against Schreiner on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with the first game beginning at 5 p.m.
