KERRVILLE, Texas –
Summer Harper's fifth-inning home run gave the Concordia Texas softball team the lead for good as they notched their first win in a doubleheader against Schreiner on Tuesday.
In the first game, the Tornados would grab the lead in the fourth inning on a
Payton Walker single to left, scoring
Taylor Smith.
The Mountaineers would respond with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie at 1-all.
Jorden Russell would keep the game close for CTX, pitching over seven innings and striking out six as the game went to extra innings.
In the eighth, Schreiner would push across the winning run on a wild pitch and take the first game 2-1.
In the second game, the Tornados would go down 5-0 early on.
But in the fifth inning, CTX would bat around, scoring six runs on five hits.
After an RBI groundout by
Haley Dennett put the Tornados on the board, Alexis Rowe would make it a 5-3 game with a two-run single to left.
Brittani Whitten followed that up with a RBI single, bringing Harper to the plate trailing by a run.
Harper would make it 6-5 in favor of CTX with her first home run of the season and the fourth of her career.
Taylor Verinsky would shut the door on the Mountaineers, allowing only one hit over the final three innings to pick up her first save of the year as the Tornados held on for the 6-5 win.
Up next, CTX will host Hardin-Simmons in their home opener on Thursday at 6 p.m. The games were moved up a day due to the forecasted weather conditions.
