Tornados break out the bats in sweep of Hardin-Simmons

AUSTIN, Texas – Stellar pitching combined with a high-powered offense led to the Concordia Texas softball team sweeping Hardin-Simmons, including back-to-back wins in a doubleheader on Friday.

In the first game of the day, Taylor Verinsky did not allow a hit till the fifth inning, as she faced two over the minimum for the game, while striking out four for the complete game win.

The Tornados got on the board in a hurry, scoring four runs in the first inning, including a two-run single from Katie Daniel.

Concordia Texas would add a run in the third and fifth innings to extend their lead to 6-0.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Taylor Smith would pitch run and after a stolen base would come home on a wild pitch. After a Cowgirls' error extended the inning, Diana Payne would score the eighth run of the game on a wild pitch and the Tornados won 8-0 by run rule.

In the nightcap, Simone Langland would strike out four of the first six HSU hitters, including punching out the side in the first inning.

The Tornados would give Langland plenty of run support, scoring 13 runs in the second and third innings combined and led 13-0 after three frames.

The Cowgirls would get a run back in the fifth, but CTX would complete the sweep with the run rule going into effect after five innings, winning 13-1.

Brittani Whitten finished the game with a pair of hits, driving in three and scoring twice. Kayla Patton, playing in center, would also tally two hits along with two runs and two RBIs.

The Tornados will next face Southwestern in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. from Tornado Softball Field.
