SAUGET, Ill. – The Concordia Texas baseball team faced No. 6 Concordia Chicago and Webster on Monday in games that were originally scheduled for Millsaps College Tournament, splitting the pair of games at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
In the first game of the day,
Matthew Williams would pitch seven innings, allowing only two hits while striking out seven Cougars.
Concordia Chicago would strike first though, scoring a pair of runs in the 4th inning, both of them being unearned.
Ryan Clouse would go 2-2 from the plate with a walk for the Tornados, but were unable to push across a run, falling to the Cougars 2-0.
In the second game, CTX would jump out to a 2-0 lead after an inning as
Bret Leiferman went deep for a two-run home run, his first of the season.
The Tornados would add a run in the fifth on a
Casen Novak RBI single to extend their lead to 3-0.
Heading into the ninth up 3-2, CTX would score an insurance run as Novak worked a bases loaded walk to bring home Clouse.
The Gorloks would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning before
Caleb Nicholson would enter the game and shut the door, getting the final two outs to pick up his first save of the year as the Tornados won 4-3.
Justin Traxler would get his first win of the year, entering in relief for
Cole Angelle and pitch four plus innings, striking out three.
Up next, CTX returns to Tornado Field for their first conference games of the season as they host Ozarks in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
