TYLER, Texas – The Concordia Texas softball team jumped ahead early lead twice, but were unable to hold it either time as they dropped both games of the doubleheader against No. 3 UT Tyler Wednesday at Suddenlink Field.
The Tornados (6-7, 5-3 ASC) went up 2-0 in both games but ended up losing both games 6-2 and 7-6.
In the first game of the doubleheader CTX jumped ahead 2-0, but were unable to hold the lead as the Patriots produced one run in the third and five in the fourth to take the home a 6-2 victory.
Brittani Whitten got the scoring started for the Tornados in the second inning when she belted a 2-2 pitch over the left center field wall to make the score 1-0.
Anissa Garcia brought home the second run of the day in the third inning when she hit a line drive to right field with the bases loaded that worked as a sacrifice fly.
UT Tyler got on the board in the bottom half of the third one a two-out RBI single through the right side to cut the lead in half.
The Patriots broke the game open in the fourth thanks to some clutch two-out hitting. They got a two-RBI single to take a 3-2 lead with two away and then Victoria Gonzales extended the lead to four with a three-run blast to right.
CTX was unable to get back into the game after the fourth and fell 6-2 in game one.
Game two started much like game one, with the Tornados jumping ahead 2-0 on another home run off the bat of Whitten. The senior from Roseville, Calif., finished the doubleheader 4-for-4 with two homers, three RBIs and two walks.
UTT tied the game in the bottom half of the first with back-to-back RBI doubles, but CTX was able to re-take the lead on a two-RBI single off the bat of
Katie Daniel.
In the fourth, the Patriots tacked on a run to cut the lead to 4-3, but Jorden Russell danced out of danger leaving a runner on third base.
The Tornados got the run right back plus one in the top of the fifth when Mycahla Howard hit a two-RBI double up the middle to extend the lead to 6-3.
UT Tyler again rallied to win, however, with four runs in the bottom of the 7th to win 7-6.
Next up, CTX will take on UMHB in a three-game series in Belton, Texas.
