JACKSON, Miss. – Trailing 5-4 in the fifth, the Concordia Texas softball team scored two runs in the inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Belhaven Saturday at Jim McLeod Field.
The Tornados played stellar defense throughout, throwing two runners out at the plate in the seventh inning, to move to 12-11, 11-7 in the American Southwest Conference.
In the first inning, CTX opened the scoring with four runs thanks to a two-RBI single off the bat of
Anissa Garcia and and a two-RBI double from
Katie Daniel.
The Blazers responded with two runs of their own to cut the lead to 4-2 with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the first.
In the third, Belhaven grabbed the lead on an RBI single and a two-run double to move head 5-4.
Brittani Whitten made sure CTX bounced back, however, as she brought home the tying run with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Whitten, a senior out of Roseville, Calif., then stole third and came home on an errant throw by the catcher to give the Tornados a 6-5 lead.
BU threatened to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh when they began the inning with three straight singles.
Jorden Russell did not flinch in the circle as she was able to get back-to-back groundouts to second baseman
Alexia Rowe who fired home to get the force out both times. Russell, a junior from Leander, Texas, then induced a groundout back to her to clinch the win.
Five different Tornados racked up multi-hit games in the win as
Emma Martino, Garcia,
Summer Harper and
Haley Dennett had two hits apiece while Rowe, a senior from Waco, Texas, finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Next up, CTX will step outside of ASC play for a home matchup against Houston-Victoria on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
