AUSTIN, Texas –
Haley Dennett had four hits over two games as the Concordia Texas softball team split a doubleheader against Houston-Victoria on Tuesday.
In the first game, the Tornados got off to a hot start, batting around in the first inning.
Emma Martino had two hits in the inning alone, as CTX scored seven runs on eight hits and led 7-0 after one.
Haley Dennett and Martino each had two hits for the Tornados, each scoring once and driving in a run.
The Jaguars would get a run back in the second, but that is all
Taylor Verinsky would allow as she gave up only the one run on six hits in five innings of work to pick up her second win of the year.
Jorden Russell would close out the game, tossing a pair of scoreless innings along with a strikeout as CTX defeated UHV 7-1.
In the second game, the Jaguars would strike first, scoring two runs in the first inning. They would make it 3-0 after pushing across another run in the second.
Olivia Kaase would cut it to 3-1 on an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, but UHV responded with a run in third and led 4-1 after two and a half.
The Tornados would rally with a run each in the third and fourth innings, including another RBI for Kaase on the squeeze sacrifice bunt in the fourth to cut the deficit to one run.
A lightning delay would occur going into the bottom of the sixth, forcing teams off the field for a 30-minute delay.
Returning to the field, CTX would look to tie it up in their final at bat in the seventh. Whitten would have a one-out single and steal second to put the tying run at second. But the Jaguars retired the final two batters and the Tornados came up short, 4-3.
Between games, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council honored Dr. Jennifer Hofmann as the Faculty member of the Year and Cupertino Garcia Dominguez as the Staff member of the Year for their continued support and appreciation of the student-athletes and the Concordia Texas athletics department.
Up next, CTX will continue its home stand when they host Louisiana College in a three-game beginning on Friday with a doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m.
