MARSHALL, Texas –
Carson Cox had three of the Concordia Texas baseball team's five home runs on the day as they took down East Texas Baptist in both games of their doubleheader on Friday.
In the first game, Cox would go 4-4 from the plate, totaling four RBIs and scored twice.
The Tornados led 3-2 after five innings when
Caleb Maddox would lead off the inning with a double.
One out later, Cox would send one over the wall to left center to give the Tornados a 4-2 lead.
Caleb Rodriguez would follow Cox with a solo blast to left for back-to-back home runs and make it 6-3.
After five innings of work by
Matthew Williams, including seven strikeouts,
Kylen Harrell and
Caleb Nicholson would throw each throw a scoreless inning as CTX took the first game 6-3.
In the second game, Cox would get it going for the Tornados again with another two-run home run, this time in the first inning to give CTX a 2-0 lead.
Knotted up at 4-4 going into the sixth,
Jacob Stegent and
Michael Evan would each single with one out and move into scoring position on an error, bringing Maddox to the plate.
Maddox would give the Tornados the lead for good with a three-run shot to left-center and make it 7-4.
Justin Traxler would enter in relief of
Daniel Lewis in the fifth and go the distance, throwing four-plus scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and racking up eight strikeouts.
Concordia Texas would add on insurance runs in the final two innings, with three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth, defeating the Tigers 12-4.
Cox finished the day with seven hits, eight RBIs and scored four times as the Tornados had 18 runs on 26 hits over the two games.
Concordia Texas will go for the sweep over East Texas Baptist on Saturday at 1 p.m. from Woods Field in Marshall, Texas.
