Russell tosses first career no-hitter in sweep of Crusaders

AUSTIN, Texas – Jorden Russell struck out five as she tossed her first career no-hitter and the Concordia Texas softball team swept University of Dallas in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Russell would allow only one walk through seven innings of work to pick up her seventh win of the year and record the second no-hitter of the season for the Tornados. Simone Langland threw a no-hitter against Hardin-Simmons earlier this season on March 3.

It ties the program record for no-hittters in a single season, set during the 2011 season.

Offensively, the Tornados would do all their damage in the first inning.

Brittani Whitten would single to lead off the inning and reach third after back-to-back stolen bases. One out later, Haley Dennett would CTX a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to left. After stealing second, Dennett would come home on Summer Harper's single up the middle to make it 2-0.

It was all Russell would need as she cruised through the seven frames, inducing a ground out to third to end the game as the Tornados won 2-0.

In the second game, CTX would fall behind 1-0 to the Crusaders early on.

In the second, the Tornados would respond with a four-run inning. Harper and Mycahla Howard would lead off with back-to-back doubles to tie it up at 1-all.

After a fielder's choice, Morgan Loredo would reach on a bunt single and bring home Howard to make it 2-1. Whitten and Diana Payne would each have RBI singles in the inning as well and make it 4-1 after two frames.

Langland and Taylor Verinsky would shut UD down after the first, allowing only a run in the seventh, and striking out three on the night as CTX pulled away with a 7-1 win to sweep the Crusaders.

Up next, the Tornados will travel to Brownwood, Texas to take on Howard Payne in a three-game series, beginning on Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
