CTX sweeps Howard Payne in Senior Day doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – On a day where eight seniors were honored, the Concordia Texas baseball team earned 6-3 and 15-7 wins over Howard Payne Saturday at Tornado Field.

With the two wins, the Tornados moved to 22-11, 15-5 in the American Southwest Conference and are now in sole possession of first place in the ASC.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets jumped ahead 2-0 early on with a two-run double to take the lead in the top half of the second.

CTX responded in the bottom of the third, however, as they were able to take a 3-2 lead on an RBI single from Casen Novak and back-to-back wild pitches to score Clarence Guidry III and Novak.

After HPU scored a run in the top half of the fourth to tie the game 3-3, Michael Evan put the Tornados up for good when he lifted a home run over the right field wall.

In the fifth and sixth, the Tornados added single insurance runs when Novak came home on a wild pitch and Guidry III drove in a run on an RBI fielder's choice.

Matthew Williams picked up the complete game victory on the mound, after throwing 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six.

Game two started much like game one, with the Yellow Jackets scoring first in the top half of the first on an RBI single.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Tornados once again took advantage of a wild pitch as Guidry III raced home to tie the game.

Starting pitcher Calvin Bush settled in after the first, earning his second victory of the year after throwing 5.0 innings and allowing two hits, two runs and fanning two for CTX.

The Tornados took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and broke the game open with a seven-run third inning highlighted by RBI doubles from Ryan Clouse, Guidry III, Carson Cox and Reed Carlton.

Guidry III, a junior from Pflugerville, Texas, finished game two 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs.

After HPU cut the lead to 12-4 in the seventh, CTX responded once again with a three-run bottom half to re-extend the lead to 11.

Seniors Cole Angelle, Ryan Capel, Michael Evan, Kylen Harrell, Caleb Maddox, Caleb Rodriguez, Justin Traxler and Daniel Williams were honored between the doubleheader.

The series concludes Sunday with a single game at 1:00 p.m. at Tornado Field.
