TYLER, Texas –
Reed Carlton had back-to-back two-RBI singles in two straight innings to help the Concordia Texas baseball team earn a 12-6 comeback victory over UT Tyler Saturday at Irwin Field.
In a rubber match that featured an hour and 10-minute rain delay, CTX won the game and the series to move to 25-12, 18-6 ASC and clinch at least a top-three seed in the American Southwest Conference Tournament.
After UT Tyler jumped ahead 5-1 through six innings, the Tornados plated two runs in the seventh, added four in the eighth and produced five more in the ninth to grab the victory.
UTT scored three runs in the bottom half of the first on a bases loaded walk, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. CTX responded with a run of their own in the top of the third, but the Patriots extended the lead to 5-1 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Carlton, a junior out of Austin, Texas, came to the plate with two on and two away in the top of the seventh and promptly ripped a single up the middle to cut the lead to 5-3.
The rain started to pour after the conclusion of the seventh and seemingly woke up the bats for the Tornados.
Cole Angelle was able to produce the first run of the inning for CTX when he laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score
Michael Evan.
After back-to-back walks loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, Carlton came through in the clutch once again with another two-RBI single up the middle to give the Tornados their first lead of the game.
Daniel Williams then worked a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 7-5.
In the ninth, the Tornados again produced offensively with two outs, scoring five runs with two away. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI triple off the bat of
Jacob Stegent and an RBI single up the middle from
Michael Evan.
In all, CTX scored 10 of its 12 runs with two outs, including their last eight runs of the game.
Caleb Nicholson (5-1) earned the win on the mound after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
The Tornados currently sit in first place in the ASC standings and will await their fate as they finish their season with a non-conference two game set against Southwestern starting on Thursday in Georgetown, Texas at 7:00 p.m.
