Tornados drop regular season finale to Southwestern

AUSTIN, Texas – Reed Carlton hit a three-run home run and Calvin Bush threw five scoreless innings, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas baseball team fell in their final regular season home game of the season 11-5 to Southwestern Friday night at Tornado Field.

The Tornados jumped ahead 4-0 after five innings, but were unable to hold onto the lead as CTX closes the regular season with a 26-13 overall record.

Carson Cox got the scoring started when he hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home Alex Britz.

In the fifth, Carlton, a junior from Austin, Texas, came to the plate with two men on and promptly unloaded on a pitch and sent it over the 30-foot chain link wall in left field for his second homer of the season. He finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.

The Pirates cut the lead in half on two unearned runs in the top half of the sixth inning.

Southwestern then took the lead for good with a six-run seventh inning in which the Pirates only recorded four hits but also drew four walks to make the score 8-4.

CTX left a total of 11 runners on base in the loss, including six in the final four innings.

Bush, a junior out of Austin, Texas, got the start on the mound did not factor into the decision after throwing 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, neither of which were earned, while not allowing a hit and striking out five.

Despite the loss, the Tornados will still be a host site and the top overall seed for the American Southwest Conference Tournament on May 4-6 at Tornado Field. CTX will begin the tournament with a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, May 4 against the eighth overall seed yet to be determined.
