Tornados’ rally falls short in opening game of West Regional

SPOKANE, Wash. – Trailing 6-0 in the sixth inning, the Concordia Texas baseball team rallied to take the lead in the seventh, but were unable to hold it as they fell 9-8 to Texas Lutheran Thursday night at Avista Stadium in the opening game of the NCAA West Regional.

Trailing by two going into the bottom of the ninth, CTX plated a run but nothing more as they fell to 29-17 overall on the season.

Reed Carlton was phenomenal at the plate in the loss, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI while Carson Cox and Daniel Williams also produced multi-hit games for the Tornados.

The Bulldogs struck first with two runs in the first inning and tacked on two more in the third on a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0.

After TLU added two in the top half of the sixth, CTX made sure the lead did not swell anymore as they answered with two runs of their own thanks to two straight wild pitches with runners on third to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Tornados then exploded in the seventh inning with five runs to take the lead for the first time in the game. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Cox as well as back-to-back RBI doubles from Carlton and Alex Britz. CTX took a 7-6 lead when Clarence Guidry III grounded out to second with Britz at third.

Texas Lutheran did not go away quietly, however, as they responded with two runs of their own in the top half of the eighth to re-take the lead. The Bulldogs then added an insurance run in the ninth to increase the lead to 9-7.

Carlton, a junior out of Austin, Texas, kept the Tornados in the game when he lead off the bottom half of the ninth with a double and was subsequently brought home on an RBI groundout off the bat of Brtiz. CTX was unable to add anymore, however, and fell 9-8.

The Tornados have been in this position before, losing the first game of the West Regional to California Lutheran before making a run all the way to the regional championship game in the 2017 season.

Next up, CTX will take on the No. 6 seed Willamette, who knocked off No. 1 Chapman 10-5, Friday at 4:30 p.m. CT at Avista Stadium.
